There’s new trousers in town

culottes

Move over skinnies; there’s new trousers in town. You heard – my staple black skinny jeans have been replaced. I blame my beloved jumpsuit. The wide, cropped leg inspired me to invest in a pair of culottes for winter and they have been crowned this week’s outfit of the week.

Culottes can be tricky to wear. They need to sit on the waist at just the right spot and be just the right length and if not, things can go horribly wrong. If I’m honest, these Zara culottes on the hanger are everything I want. Elastic waist, pockets, tie at the front. All very positive features. However, it feels like someone got the measurements wrong, leaving the material about half a centimetre short in a rather uncomfortable spot. Get my drift?

I’m persisting though as the positives outweigh the negatives. Whether it’s boots, tights, socks, sneakers, heels, a cardigan or a shirt, these black culottes are the perfect staple for the winter months ahead. What’s even better is they have become a part of one of my favourite outfits. The culottes and my white ‘hug’ in a jumper are a match made in heaven.

Outfit of the week

Outfit of the week

Breaking all my rules!

Did you ever have one of those weeks when not once did you say ‘I have nothing to wear’? That was me last week. I’m in full summer mode and dresses that have been hanging in the wardrobe desperate to be worn are getting a good work out. My options for outfit of the week were plentiful but there was one clear winner.

Check out this fabulous vintage dress from one of my favourite Dublin spots Om Diva. The striking pattern, the style and at just ten euro I had to have it. But, buying it meant going against one of my shopping rules.

Unfortunately the dress was too big, more potato sack than dress but I could see it had potential. Now I don’t like to think there are rules when it comes to fashion but I do have a few when it comes to shopping and I have them because over the years I’ve learnt the hard way. Number one, don’t buy something that doesn’t fit. Sounds logical, rational, a no-brainer you say. Like I said, I’ve learnt the hard way! When it came to this dress, after my initial love-sick I can’t live without it moment I did think ‘Oh well it’s too big’. However, on closer inspection I knew that someone with better sewing skills than mine could bring out its glorious shape and one that works well for me. Thankfully I had just the woman in mind so with D’s sewing talents in mind how could I resist?!

Stripes on repeat

#ootw

You may have noticed in the past month there have been three pieces of clothing that have been on constant repeat. All three pieces could have got the title of Outift of the Week but I chose this skirt for one main reason; it cost me €4!

I saw this striped, almost shimmery skirt on the sale rail in Topshop and I picked it up mainly because of the soft, stretchy fabric. The stripes of course helped but I wasn’t that keen on the colour scheme. Then I thought about what I could wear it with; t-shirts, shirts, vests, jumpers, cardigans, heels, flats, sneakers and with a price tag of €4 this slightly out of my comfort zone skirt was mine.

#ootw

I am so glad I took the risk as it is one of the most comfortable and versatile things I own. I initially wore it with a green jumper and it is one of my favourite combinations. I’ve worn it with a black t-shirt for a more casual look and also with a yellow top for a real in-your-face pop of colour but my mind always goes back to green.

I’m slightly embarrassed at how often I wear this skirt but for the comfort, price and endless style options, I’ll get over it!

Patterns and pleats

It is supposed to be spring here. It’s not.

It’s not all bad. There are the odd moments of sunshine and that’s enough for me to get some skin on display. My motto this past winter was to wear my summer clothes with layers and now it’s time to ditch at least one layer.

This week’s outfit of the week is this gorgeous dress that I’ve been wearing with tights, a cardigan, a scarf and even another layer under the dress if cold enough. I wore this on the weekend and granted, it wasn’t exactly warm and there were some heavy showers but it didn’t stop me. With bare legs and a cardigan, I fell back in love with the gorgeous pattern and pleats.

Outfit of season!

Outfit of the season

I realised I haven’t done an outfit of the week/month this year and there is one reason for that. I’ve been wearing the same clothes over and over and over again! No I didn’t change my mind and set up a capsule wardrobe but it does feel like I have in this case two outfits that are on permanent repeat. It’s lucky I like them and really it is no surprise these monochrome dresses take the crown of outfit of the season!

My approach this winter was to wear all my summer clothes with lots of layers and it seems to be getting me through the season. The addition of these two beauties made things a bit easier.

If I could, I would wear these two day after day after day. I never seem to tire of them. Each day feels like a new one when I wear them. Like a comfortable blank canvas ready for a different pair of shoes, a coloured cardigan, leggings, tights or a mix-and-match of accessories. Whatever the combination, how great it is to feel like I’m in a completely different outfit each time.

Colour, prints and polka dots

Colour, prints and polka dots

#OOTW

If you follow me on social media you would have seen this past week was all about colour, prints and polka dots. A surprise even to me, but on Monday when I woke up, I picked up some of my black pieces and I just wasn’t in the mood.

Well, not a complete surprise when I think about it.  I am fortunate enough to be working on some side projects (which sadly I can’t share with you just yet). Within these projects I’m exploring colour, materials, prints, and patterns, and I’m finding that everywhere I look, my mind is overwhelmed with inspiration and ideas. The surprising part though was that I felt like I was craving colour in my clothing. Not something I would normally go for as I usually fulfil my colour needs with accessories, red shoes, lipstick and even household accessories. This week though, I wanted to wear colour. Not just colour, but prints and patterns and to explore these against my canvas of black and white.

I took full advantage of this starting the week with this print dress and polka dot tights. You’ve probably seen this dress before. I bought it for summer but with a few extra layers this dress is going to be great in the cooler months. I matched it with a green cardigan and black boots. The tone of the green is perfect for me, warm, comforting, and colourful without being too in your face. I found this green really brought out the warmth in the print and added a softness in comparison to wearing say a black cardigan. The black and white polka dot tights, well they are just fun and provided a touch of monochrome without being the feature of the outfit.

Colour, polka dots & a print

Next up, another green, polka dot and print combination but something completely different. Let’s start with the top and this is a perfect comparison to my green cardigan. The green shade of this jumper is what I would describe as an ‘in your face’, apple green. It is bright, and there is no hiding from it. I decided to embrace it so out came my black and white polka dot trousers and leopard print heels. Lucky I was in the mood for such an outfit as I can imagine on a different day and a different mood, this outfit could be torture! Thankfully it was everything I was looking for that day, comfortable, smart and fun!

Polka dots, colour & a print

I knew it was going to be hard to top this outfit and I was starting to have withdrawals from my red shoes so out came what I call my winter dress. Although not technically a print, this thick, wintry fabric has very thin woven threads of blue, grey and brown and to me it feels very bright thanks to the cream backdrop. I paired it with black, ribbed tights and the star of the outfit, these fabulous rubys.

Red please!

The week wasn’t complete without a patterned shirt. I love the clash of the straight blue and maroon lines against the tiny white flowers. I actually wore it with my green cardigan from earlier in the week and for the same reasons. Again the green added a layer of softness and just for kicks, another colour to the outfit. I naturally went to put on my red flats but I wanted to keep the focus on the shirt so I wore a pair of navy blue heels and under black jeans it was a nice overall line from head to toe.

Printed shirt

For anyone who wears a lot of colour, you may be wondering what the hell I’m on about. But if you are anything like me, who uses colour only in small splashes, a week like this doesn’t come around often so it was fun to experiment, to try different combinations and to feel good in them. After all isn’t that the point of creating outfits, to make us feel good?!

Weekend wardrobe

 Did somebody say weekend?

#OOTW

Weekend goodies

I don’t usually post my #OOTW on a Monday but seeing as I’m talking about weekends and days off, I figure you are either still dreaming about the one just gone or planning the weekend ahead, so  either way, it’s perfect timing for this week’s #OOTW.

Favourite tees

I don’t feel I’m fully out of my winter hibernation and unless I have specific plans, I have been staying local of late. That kind of weekend, the one where breakfast rolls into lunch and there’s lots of coffees, chats and casual catch ups, means there is a certain outfit to match the mood. You can probably guess which outfits are in my weekend wardrobe as I seem to be wearing them all the time lately (check my Instagram pics if you don’t believe me). Whether it’s the comfort of a stripe or the memory of a time where I felt ‘too cool for school’ with my very first Sportsgirl t-shirt (I was far from cool but happy all the same. Aussie pals – ring any bells?), these outfits provide a comfort and ease that is perfect for that kind of weekend.

I surprise myself at times, as I do believe ‘overdressed is best’, so even the idea of wearing sneakers can be a struggle. To balance this out, I like to throw in a dressier item into the mix so I don’t feel like a complete slob. Trust me, me in full-on causal means being at home in my pjs and not getting a whole lot done.

Weekend goodies

You can see why I gravitate to these tees. Add a pair of flats or a piece of jewellery, a smaller handbag and a bomber jacket and I feel relaxed yet motivated enough to face the day (and food) ahead.

What do you wear on a relaxed weekend in?

Another pair of black jeans please

#OOTW

Black jeans

You have probably seen my last post by now, I’m so excited I could oui! and the excitement of it all made me completely forget about my Outfit of the week, so while I’m away stuffing my face with croissants, here’s this week’s #OOTW.

This week’s #OOTW is a staple and an item I couldn’t live without. The change of season always makes me pull out clothes I haven’t worn for a while and somehow I feel refreshed, but there is one thing that remains the same for me; black jeans. It’s hard to go past denim but there is something about black jeans that really floats my boat.

Black jeans

It is so important to have an understanding of brands and their sizing, shapes and styles of jeans and even more so, what materials work for you. I’m a fan of skinny jeans and to be honest traditional denim doesn’t do it for me. I prefer a softer, more flexible material with just the right amount of stretch.

These kinds of jeans means I can take them through all seasons. Ok, maybe I wouldn’t wear them in 40 degree heat (I hardly think I’ll face that temperature here) but you get my drift. I love going from a casual day look to wearing them on a night out and it’s amazing how one item can create so many different looks. I wear my jeans so often I have a few pairs on the go. I wear them to the point that the holes are beyond repair and they have faded so much they are now different shades of grey. Even then I can’t throw them out so I have developed a hierarchy system; brand new pair, new pair, old pair which can be worn in public and an old pair for around the house. There are sub layers in this hierarchy but I won’t bore you!

Black jeans

We all have those pieces that we love and can’t live without and I say everyone needs a pair of black jeans in their wardrobe.

What’s your staple item?

Shoes!

#OOTW

Shoes glorious shoes!

Shoes glorious shoes

I think it’s pretty clear by now that I am slightly obsessed with the weather. Only a couple of weeks ago I decided winter was over and signs of Spring were all around me. This was all I needed to put my winter boots asides and declare it ‘Flats Season’.

I was a little premature in my excitement and not long after my grand declaration, I was faced with snow showers. More specifically, snow showers on date night in which I had planned on wearing my luxurious heels but as you can imagine there was a quick costume change and the heels were sadly left behind.

#OOTW Flats

Spring flats

Despite that, the past few days have seen flowers in bloom and a warmth in the sun that has been gone for far too long. You know that warmth that seeps through your skin and warms your core? Well, the sun showed its glorious face ever so slightly but I’ve learnt my lesson so even though my boots are on standby, my flats have made it to this week’s #OOTW.

Like my Winter wardrobe, I never like to make purchases at the start of a season and when it comes to shoes it’s no different. Because I haven’t worn my flats for months, they all feel new and fresh and I love styling outfits around them.

So before I add to my spring collections of shoes (and I can already tell there are going to be many additions), I’m going to enjoy the excitement of wearing what I have and feeling Spring on what little skin I’ll dare to show.
